Zambia
Zambia is endowed with an abundance of natural resources and has one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies. Despite some positive developments, the pattern of economic growth is unequal, and poverty and inequality remain high.
Zambia also suffers from challenges related to climate change, gender inequality, economic inequality and shrinking space for civil society. While much has been done towards attaining gender equality, the lives of many women and girls remain negatively affected by gender-based violence (GBV), early marriage, limited access to sexual and reproductive health information and services, poor education, limited participation in decision-making as well as a lack of access to productive resources.

Who we are
NCA was established in Zambia in 2002 and has since implemented programmes to empower the country’s citizens, particularly vulnerable women and youth. Through strong networks and alliances within Zambian civil society, including faith-based actors, NCA has upheld and protected people’s dignity and promoted their participation in the development of their country. For NCA, a rights-based approach to development and collaboration with civil society actors are the primary means to fulfil its mandate to strengthen civil society.
Since 2011, NCA in Zambia has been part of a Joint Country Programme (JCP), together with Action by Churches Together (ACT) sister agency, DanChurchAid. The JCP fosters positive synergies among the ACT agencies, increasing the effectiveness and sustainability of member agencies’ long-term development and humanitarian response programmes.
What we do
The Zambia JCP strengthens civil society to foster human rights and dignity and empower people to participate in the development and implementation of public policies and development plans. Together with civil society organisations, the Zambia JCP and its partners implement long-term development and humanitarian programmes in:
- Gender-based Violence (GBV)
- Climate Smart Economic Empowerment (CSEE)
- Fighting Inequality (FI)
Long-term development
In Zambia, NCA works to reduce economic and gender inequalities, addressing the high prevalence of GBV, continued extreme poverty and rising inequality as well as addressing issues of economic opportunities among Zambian rights holders.
Humanitarian response
The Zambia JCP responds to humanitarian emergencies when the need arises. Recent projects in the Mantapala Refugee Settlement have focused on WASH, adolescent sexual and reproductive health and psychosocial support services in partnership with UNHCR and UNICEF.
Where we work
The JCP in Zambia implements programmes in the Eastern, Luapula, North-Western and Southern Provinces. The interventions target vulnerable women, girls, men and boys; faith, traditional, and civic leaders; multinationals and government. The engagement of these actors is key to attaining economic and gender justice.
