Nigeria

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country, largest economy and biggest democracy. Despite these labels, the government faces growing challenges in tackling ethnic and religious conflicts.

North-eastern Nigeria is particularly vulnerable to jihadists attacks, which have over the past few years resulted in the deaths of thousands of Nigerians. The north-eastern Nigeria crisis, has morphed into a regionalised armed conflict, commonly referred to as the Lake Chad crisis.

Despite the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and protection for over seven million people, including more than 1.8 million internally displaced people (IDP), the now protracted crisis is often overlooked by the international community and media.

NCA in Nigeria aims to save lives, alleviate suffering and safeguard the dignity of conflicted-affected populations. Together with its partners, NCA implements humanitarian programmes in:

  • Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
  • Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH)
  • Climate Resilient Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (CRWASH)

Long-term development

In order to promote lasting solutions, NCA strengthens the capacity of local partner organisations, community organisations, and health clinics which support GBV survivors.  Projects are aligned with federal and state line ministries and coordinated other partners to ensure that humanitarian response is linked to the long-term development agenda. NCA also strengthens interaction and understanding between community groups of different religious affiliations through inter-faith forums that bring together Muslim and Christian groups on key social topics.

Humanitarian response

NCA responds to the protracted crisis Nigeria by instituting community strategies for the prevention of gender-based violence, promoting appropriate household hygiene practices, and preventing WASH related health risks by providing safe water and appropriate environmental sanitation.

Where we work

NCA works in local government areas in the Bay States in north-east Nigeria: Dikwa, Monguno, Gwoza-Pulka, Maiduguri, Adamawa and Yobe States.
