fantastic result
The NRK telethon set a new record this weekend, raising a total of 240 million NOK. "I am both proud and humbled to see the response," says Anne-Marie Helland, general secretary of Norwegian Church Aid.
"This is fantastic, I'm almost speechless. This year's theme – Water changes everything – has really captured the imagination of Norwegians the country over, and I am both proud and humbled by the response. We look forward to starting work to secure one million people access to clean water", says Anne-Marie Helland, general secretary of Norwegian Church Aid.
With the funds raised, Norwegian Church Aid will provide sustainable access to clean water for more than one million people in eight countries.
Amazing volunteers
The main event of this year's telethon was when 100 000 fundraisers went from door to door on Sunday 19th October to raise money for Norwegian Church Aid. The public showed an almost unprecedented willingness to take part in this year's fundraiser, and local authorities around the country came up with an impressive array of creative fundraising events to support the cause.
"It's so extremely nice to see how this year's fundraising campaign prompted so many to go the extra mile. Already before the weekend, we had registered enough fundraisers to cover the entire country. And today, Norwegians the country over have knocked on quite literally millions of doors to give water to a million people. It's amazing. And I am so proud to think of how many individual people contributed, because this was their fundraising campaign, and they are the ones that at the end of the day make a difference," says telethon manager Kari Bucher.
Facts about this year's NRK telethon:
The money raised will be used on water projects in eight countries: Haiti, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Tanzania.
NCA is already established in these countries and wil support local communities by building wells, installing hand pumps, designing systems for rainwater harvesting, desalination of groundwater and other activities that are effective locally.
Securing sustainable access to clean drinking water is possible, and creates many positive knock-on effects for lives and for local communities.
